| TORONTO ~ 15 January 2007 ~ A public meeting held this evening at the Toronto Reference Library heard about the HOVER Flexible Carpooling System developed by Trip Convergence Ltd of Auckland, New Zealand. About a dozen people braved near-blizzard conditions to hear the presentation by Paul Minett, one of the inventors of the new system. The group viewed an animated video of the new system, as well as film footage from San Francisco where a similar but unfacilitated system operates. In the San Francisco example an estimated 9,000 people share rides each day with people not previously known to them. In that system the riders ride for free and the drivers can use the HOV (carpool) lane. The HOVER system would probably not be free to use, but would make it much easier to carpool, and any charges would be a small percentage of the total money saved. In HOVER riders will pay for rides using HOVER Ride Credits that they either purchase or earn by providing rides on previous days. Asked if they would use the system if it existed, there was general agreement among the audience that such a system would be of benefit to Torontonians. At meetings earlier in the day Trip Convergence had secured agreement from the Ministry of Transport for Ontario, the City of Toronto, the Toronto Transit Commission, the Town of Markham, and Pollution Probe to work together to specify a feasibility study that considers the HOVER System and it's applicability for the GTA. ![]() Picture: Paul Minett with participants at the public meeting.
